My Approach

Candid photography. Documentary style. Photojournalism.

People describe my style in different ways. Basically, I use my camera to tell honest stories and capture real moments. I’m not the type of photographer who tries to shape your day into something it’s not. So you can relax and enjoy every minute – in the knowledge that I’ll be capturing the moments that matter.

Unlimited photos.

There’s no limit on the number of photos you receive. That’s because I want to create pictures that illustrate your whole story. Not just the highlights, but also all those incredible and spontaneous moments in between.

Personal attention.

To bring your vision to life, I mostly shoot weddings on my own. So when you hire me, you get me – not an assistant. As soon as you book, I’ll be in touch with some guidance for your preparation and start gathering further information that lets me become fully familiar with your story. Once I have a good understanding of your needs and wishes, I’ll create a schedule and take care of timings. All that’s left for you to do is relax and enjoy your day with no distractions.

Your Wedding Day

Every wedding is different, and I’m happy to photograph as much or little of your day as you choose.

Here’s an example of a typical wedding day shoot:

1

Preparation

Time to get ready!

I visit both sides of the bridal party to capture the excitement of preparation; from the bride catching a glimpse of herself in the mirror, to the groom taking a deep breath to quiet nerves, or the flower girl storing her bouquet safely in the garbage bin.

2

Arrival

As anticipation builds, I photograph your guests, friends and family as they arrive at the venue.

It’s not often that everyone gets together to celebrate, and these spontaneous photos of loved ones are often the most emotive in years to come.

3

Ceremony

My lens is fixed firmly on the action -

capturing everything from walking down the aisle to the moment you say ‘I do’. After the ceremony, your guests are free to congratulate you – without interruptions. Following this, should you wish, we can also shoot some relaxed family group shots.

4

Location

Preferably with a glass of bubbles in hand

We’ll head to some quiet locations around your venue for a little down time, away from the crowds, to capture some relaxed and unforced portraits. Ever conscious there’s a party going on we’ll keep this session short and sweet! Here's a little more info on how I approach location sessions

5

Reception

As you and your guests wine, dine and dance the night away

I’ll blend into the background, candidly capturing your evening as it naturally unfolds; covering everything from the best man’s speech to Aunt Bertha cutting it up on the dance floor.

MY STORY

It all started because I didn’t want a watch.

My dad’s side of the family has a longstanding tradition; giving each boy a nice watch when he turns 18. The thing is, I was never good with watches. I kept losing them.

So I asked for a camera instead.

This camera changed my life.

I don’t know why I asked for a camera. It sat in my cupboard gathering dust for the best part of two years. But then I went travelling. I found a lot of things out the hard way on those travels, but one thing I did learn quickly was how to use that 35mm camera.

At first, I took photographs because I was travelling.

Then I realised I was travelling so I could take photographs. My camera became a massive part of me. It forced me to examine life around me, and shaped how I viewed my world. It gave me a hunger to document. This curiosity has fuelled my passion as a photographer for the last 15 years.

I followed my camera to Sydney.

I’m originally from Scotland, a place I love dearly. But I’m lucky as I now have two homes – Scotland and Australia. My amazing partner Rach and I moved to Sydney in 2011 and settled near Manly. We have two young children, Ella and Euan, who grow more Aussie as each day passes.

And finally…

I did eventually buy a new watch (after losing my old one). I’m very happy with it. It cost about $20. It’s a Casio. It’s digital. My dad’s OK with this.
